Gene Smith was a Principle Project Engineer for Cypress Semiconductor's 200mm Wafer Fab in Bloomington Minnesota. He was instrumental in developing and implementing Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions in this facility. These APC solutions helped reduce variability and improve targeting on many wafer fab processes and tools. Significant improvements were realized through implementation of a Wafer-to-Wafer Controller for CMP and a "Z" Controller in Photolithography. Gene has also developed and implemented controllers for Etch and Thin Films which have resulted in significant process capability improvements. With improved process capabilities, sampling can be reduced and Gene is working on Smart (Dynamic) Sampling algorithms for these highly capable processes.

“I have had the great pleasure of having Gene work for me at Cypress for the last couple of years as a Principle Business Process and Systems architect. Gene was responsible for working with our fabrication facilities to drive and facilitate systematic, business process, and statistical improvements across all business areas. He is very detailed oriented and statistically superior to any employee I have ever managed in my career. Gene participated on many cross functional teams as was regarded as a strong team player, honest, outspoken, and had a great attention to detail. One of the most important areas that Gene drove was to put in place a model of prioritizing IT projects, to include how they impacted the business, cost, and what value they brought to the corporation. This model is crucial to Cypress not wasting money on software. He has done the same effort on all of his advance process control projects in our fabrication facility in Minnesota. Overall, Gene is in the top 1% of all employees I have ever managed in my 27 year high tech career and would gladly recommend him to any company he sought employment at.”
